Home Security Cameras and Cat 6 Network in Farragut

The homeowners had just finished a major renovation of their Farragut home and wanted to upgrade their security and network infrastructure at the same time. Their requirements were ambitious: six outdoor cameras covering the perimeter and driveway, a network video recorder with 30 days of continuous storage, hardwired Cat 6 drops to every room, a 16-port managed switch in a dedicated network closet, and Wi-Fi 6 access points to provide whole-home coverage including the detached garage and outdoor entertaining area.

We started with the structured cabling because everything else depends on it. We pulled 18 Cat 6 plenum-rated cable drops from the network closet to every bedroom, the home office, the family room, and four ceiling access-point locations. The cable was run through attic and wall spaces, terminated with industry-standard punch-down at the network closet patch panel, and each run was tested and certified for gigabit and 10-gigabit performance. The 16-port managed switch was rack-mounted with PoE budget sized to power the six cameras and four Wi-Fi access points simultaneously.

The camera install on day two covered six locations: two over the driveway, one over the front door, two on the back patio, and one in the detached garage. All cameras were 4K PoE units mounted with weatherproof junction boxes and run back through the soffits to the network closet. The network video recorder was configured for the family's mobile-app access and continuous 30-day storage on a redundant drive setup. The homeowners now have full home surveillance plus the network backbone for any future smart-home additions.
